Traveling Notary Public Network

Going the distance to serve the Public

Please help me to learn about becoming a traveling notary. I am a retired Home Economist and just heard about this from a traveling notary in S.C.

Well, first, are you a Notary Public in your state? That's the first step. The next step is to get familiar with loan closing documents. Then you sign up at free websites such as 123notary or notaryrotary and offer your services. If you have some money to invest (and, really, you cannot expect to go into business for yourself without investing money to start it up), you can buy a better listing on 123notary or notaryrotary -- or join the National Notary Association and buy their books for becoming a Certified Notary Signing Agent, then take their test and get certified. There are other options, of course. The Signing Registry has some excellent materials and is well worth a look. You will need a cell phone, high speed internet connection, laser printer with legal and letter size trays and excellent organizational skills, as well as some other skills that only being self-employed will teach you. If you visit my website at http://notarymemphis.com, you can see more about becoming a Notary Signing Agent. Beyond the NSA end, there is some money to be made by just offering traveling notary public service -- people in hospitals, nursing homes, doctor offices, other offices and such all need things to be notarized and cannot always get out to where the notaries are. So, you offer to bring the notary to them (you!) and charge them a trip fee in addition to your notary fee. Another area to look into is doing mortgage loan application meetings, especially for reverse mortgages as those are very detailed and lots of pages. I make as much for a reverse mortgage application meeting as I do for the actual closing or signing because they are so involved and time-consuming. (You will want to read up on Reverse Mortgages before you offer this service, of course -- there are some excellent articles on HUD.gov and other government websites about reverse mortgages, as they are government-backed loans.)

I hope this helps you.
